Hardbottom habitats in this area feature rock colonized by calcifying algae, octocorals, stony corals and sponges. Multiple wetland systems such as lagoons, estuaries, and/or marshes can result from such conditions depending on the surroundings. Any activity that may deprive barrier islands of sand must be viewed with disapproval. The sand is coarser. Recall from Chapter 8 that 18,000 years ago sea level was about 400ft lower than it is today and that the outer edge of the Atlantic continental shelf was nearly fully exposed. R. Unlike stationary landforms, barrier islands build up, erode, migrate and rebuild over time in response to waves, tides, currents and other physical processes in the open ocean environment. The effect of waves at this point is weak because of the depth. From the weakest to the strongest, they are swash regime, collision regime, overwash regime, and inundation regime. The middle shoreface is strongly influenced by wave action because of its depth. They also provide a sheltered environment that enables estuaries and marshes to form behind them. The model predicts that retreat of the Virginia barrier islands will increase from its current rate of about 5 meters per year to almost 7 meters per year by 2100, a nearly 50% increase. Compared to Santa Rosa Island, the west-central Florida barrier islands are shorter and wider, and they often display mixed-energy drumstick or humpback morphologies (Figures 36(b)36(e)). Given this circumstance, one might think that the coastline looked very different 18,000 years ago. In an investigation of barrier islands shorelines in mixed-energy settings throughout the world, Hayes (1979) noted that many barriers exhibit a chicken leg drumstick barrier island shape. Shore protection measures were first employed during settlement expansion, although the intensity of development was probably too limited early in this stage for public works to be cost effective. On many long-term eroding barrier islands there is significant spatial topographic variability and, particularly, longshore variation in vegetation cover and species richness. He proposed that sediment moving in the breaker zone through agitation by waves in longshore drift would construct spits extending from headlands parallel to the coast. Millions of visitors are drawn to the Gulf of Mexico for Gulf Islands National Seashore's emerald coast waters, magnificent white beaches, fertile marshes and historical landscapes. Major storms have periodically eroded these beaches and destroyed or damaged buildings, support infrastructure, and protection structures, but post-storm reconstruction efforts have rebuilt these facilities, usually to larger proportions. In their particular case, the growing Atlantic Ocean eroded sediment from the Delaware headlands, which was deposited by currents as an elongated body of sand. They also frequently act as refuges for plant and animal communities, including a number of rare species, and are therefore of considerable importance in their own right. Like the upper shoreface, it is constantly affected by wave action. The most extensive mangrove coast in the United States is the southwest shore of Florida in the Everglades National Park and the region of Florida Bay. Mangroves include several species of low trees and shrubs that thrive in the warm, shallow, saltwater environments of the lower latitudes. Many inlets that existed in 1886 and all inlets that formed since that time were closed artificially by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers or kept from reopening after natural closure to eliminate undesirable shoreline fluctuations, facilitate land transportation, or increase the flow through nearby controlled inlets. A notable exception is the Hudson Canyon at the southwest end of Long Island, New York. They are typically rich habitats for a variety of flora and fauna. 10.5, 10.26, and 10.28). Vulnerabilities of barrier islands include risks associated with sea-level rise, as well as energetic ocean events, such as tsunamis and storms, the latter of which are crucial in reshaping barrier islands. Barrier formation through spit detachment generally requires a shallow headland bay complex where spit formation is followed by breaching at the updrift end and the preservation of the downdrift end as a barrier through bypassing of sediment across the inlet (Fisher, 1968; Armitage et al., 2006). Ultimately, there may be limited recovery from overwash before another series of events occurs and this sets an upper limit for the ability of the system to adjust. Barrier islands are generally restricted to comparatively wide, gently shelving coasts that permit the barrier to establish some distance offshore, enclosing a lagoon between it and the mainland shoreline (Figure 34). It is especially important for sea level to remain relatively unchanged during barrier island formation and growth. Most of these projects placed materials dredged from the new waterways onto the marsh surfaces to provide a platform for houses and roads. In addition to tide and wave actions, development of barrier islands is also affected by other processes (e.g., stochastic extreme events, sea-level change, tectonic movements, and fluvial input). These are unstable systems, which bear the brunt of wave attack and are hence of major importance in protecting the mainland, especially during storms. These reefs have a high degree of coral cover but low coral diversity. Hurricanes can do immense barrier island damage, as Charley did in 2004, but even that storm brought some beneficial sand to the coast. They support algae, sponges, urchins and many species of coral and fish. When hurricanes and storms make landfall, these strands absorb much of their force, reducing wave energy and protecting inland areas.
